Vespa-Vulgaris-common wasp 2 * You can tell this is a common wasp or yellowjacket by the four yellow blotches on the thorax - stripping my shed again for wood. * 621 x 795 * (355KB)

Vespa-Vulgaris-common wasp-face * This worker common wasp seems to be smiling at the camera - and note the stripped wood from a bench in our garden which is probably why she was smiling. * 879 x 575 * (178KB)

Vespula-Vulgaris--Wasp-Wais * I thought this was a great picture of the Common Wasp showing off its amazingly tiny waist. Just how small is that wasp waist! * 1012 x 818 * (100KB)

Vespula-Vulgaris-Common-Was * So how do you tell one similar wasp from another? Well I have learnt that the easiest way but perhaps the most dangerous way is to have a good look at their face. A black anchor shape in the middle of the yellow circule means that this is the Vespula Vulgaris or Common Wasp. * 392 x 369 * (40KB)

Vespa-Vulgaris-common wasp-face2 * 1692 x 976 * (145KB)

These are pictures of "wasps" and primarily the ones that are likely to sting you if you live in the UK
